Big Advances in Distance Learning and ‘Open Education’
Salt Lake Tribune article on the growing ranks of K-12 students engaged in distance learning in Utah. The state saw a 30 percent increase in students from the previous year. The Open High School of Utah takes a particularly interesting approach to distance learning and is believed to be the first secondary school in the nation (perhaps the world) to use learning materials and textbooks that are freely available for anyone’s use, remixing and redistribution. Because the materials aren’t produced by commercial publishers, they can be tailored to meet students’ educational needs, free of copyright or licensing restraints. We’ll be curious to see how this approach works.
